PORTLAND, Maine—Greenhut Galleries will host the launching party for Carl and David Little’s new book Paintings of Portland (Down East Books) on Thursday, June 14, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Two paintings by Alison Rector are included in the book.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. The event is free and open to the public.

            The city of Portland and its surroundings have inspired a wide range of art over the past 200 years. Longfellow’s “city by the sea” has been a visual talisman for a host of artists, from early masters like Harrison Bird Brown and John Bradley Hudson to a remarkable roster of contemporary painters. Paintings of Portland features a wide range of motifs—signature buildings, street scenes, the waterfront, and surrounding landscapes—in all seasons and represented by an array of styles.

About a quarter of the book is devoted to historical pieces, including paintings by John Calvin Stevens, Charles Codman, Mary Longfellow and Edward Hopper. Contemporary artists include Paul Black, Mary Bourke, Katherine Bradford, Alfred Chadbourn, Robert Cohen, Thomas Connolly, Alison Goodwin, Sarah Knock, C. Michael Lewis, Lindsay Hancock, David Campbell, Caren-Marie Michel, Joseph Nicoletti, Alison Rector, Vivien Russe, Robert Solotaire, Alice Spencer, Michael Waterman, and Debra Yoo. The cover painting by Joel Babb is a bird’s-eye view of Monument Square.
